Day 21 – Another moment, in great detail

I'm a pirate. I'm wearing big black boots and striped pants. My giant hat is sitting on my table. Don't put this up, I'd told the stocker. It's mine. I already paid for it.

Charlie is next to me directing traffic. He's also in striped pants but he's got his Converse low top sneakers on. He loses points for accuracy, but gains them because he's good at kicking ass and taking names.

But then, so am I.

I'm folding, folding, folding. He's directing. The costumes pile up and he helps with the folding while I run the costumes back to put them up. I come back and we fold together.

A kid dodges my leg. Charlie pushes a wig on an uncertain customer. I direct someone to the costume I'm wearing so that they can try it on. We talk, loudly but not shouting, and we keep laughing and having to repeat ourselves since it's so loud and we keep getting interrupted. He slips a ladybug costume on over my striped pants and ripped shirt.

"You must hate this." The woman is maybe forty or fifty, slightly gray and leaning on a cart.

"Actually we love it."

"It's okay, you can tell me the truth. I won't tell."

We look at each other and laugh because we both know what we're going to say.

"We love it."

"You two must be crazy. This would drive me insane."

We do the only thing we can. Laugh.

Day 22 – Something that upsets you, in great detail

last year

Hi, how can I help you?
I need to return this.
Okay, hold on one moment.
Why?
Because I have to call a manager.
Why?
Because only managers can do returns. Manager to register five for a return, manager to register five for a return.
Hi, how are you?
You're a manager?
Yes I am.
She's younger than you.
Actually, I'm older.
No you're not.
Actually, I am. Do you have your receipt?
Do I need it?
Yes you do. We can't do a return without a receipt.
Why not?
There's a barcode on the bottom I need to scan in order to complete the transaction.
Fine, I'll look for it. I can't find it.
Okay, well unfortunately then we can't do a return.
But it's ripped.
Well unfortunately we cannot take back damaged costumes.
Where does it say that?
Well, it's on the bottom of your receipt.
But I don't have my receipt.
And the cashier will sometimes verbalize it.
What?
The cashier should have told you when you bought it.
Well she didn't.
Well I'm sorry about that, but unfortunately we cannot take back this costume.
That's stupid. I don't want it. I can't wear it. Wal-Mart would take it back.
I am sorry.
I'm going to that other Halloween store.
I'm sorry.
I want to talk to the manager.
I am the manager.
Well who's above you?
He is unfortunately in a meeting right now.
Well go get him.
I'm sorry I can't disturb him. Until he comes out I.
This is bullshit. I paid money for this.
Actually there he is right now. Let me go get him for you.
I thought you said he was in a meeting.
Well he was, but it must have just finished.
You're a liar. This is bullshit.
This customer needs to speak to you.
Okay, what seems to be the problem?
I bought this costume a few weeks ago and I just checked it and found a rip on it and I want to return it and she said I couldn't.
Okay, we can do that. I just need to see your receipt.
Well I don't have it.
Then I'm sorry but we can't take it back.
But I paid for it.
I'm sorry but the store's policy.
But I paid for it.
Alright, fine. Just go to the back and let them know what costume you need and bring it back up here and I'll take care of you.
Thank you.
Are you mad at me?
No.
Because I had to do it.
It's fine.
Well I'll stay up here so you don't have to deal with her anymore.
That's fine.
So you're mad at me?
