Have a Not-Bored Summer

I walk without flinching through the burning cathedral of the summer. My bank of wild grass is majestic and full of music. It is a fire that solitude presses against my lips.
- Violette Leduc, Mad in Pursuit

"There's never enough time to do all the nothing you want." - Calvin and Hobbs

The key words and phrases for summer seem to be "bored," "stir-crazy," and "stuck at home." Here's a list of links and tips straight out of my moleskine that will hopefully help remedy that. :)

♥ Have a princess day. Dress up and wear a tiara. Splurge a little and spoil yourself. Be glamorous and graceful and full of beauty. Revel in it. Then give your tiara to a little girl and tell her she's a princess too. Walk away filled with glee and joy.

♥ Host a water gun war in a local park. Invite all your friends. (Remind them to bring an extra set of clothes and a towel!)

Make some ice cream.

♥ Visit as many museums as you can. Bonus points for obscurity.

♥ Have a bubble war in a very public place.

À la Gala

♥ Have a super secret spy adventure day. Dress yourself (and any accomplices) like an international jet-setting mystery (wo)man and sulk about with a suspicious air whilst taking notes in a small book all day long. Speak in hushed whispers and use really obvious spy tricks, like looking in a compact to see behind yourself. Bonus points for an inky-looking trench coat.

♥ Get pool tags and go to your community pool at odd hours.

♥ Rediscover your childhood. Play with legos, play-doh, and finger paints.

29 Awesome things to do this summer

♥ Go to the cinema dressed as if you were attending a big-time premier in Hollywood. Really put on the glam. Wear your old prom/homecoming dress. Bring your entourage. Bonus points for paparazzi.

♥ Host a Mad Hatter-style tea party.

♥ Have a croquet tournament.

♥ Dress like a fairy and run errands. Bonus points for glitter and granting wishes.

Fun things to do in Summer

♥ Organize an out-of-season Easter egg hunt or some other sort of scavenger hunt.

♥ Wait until the sun has set and then play hide and seek or tag with your friends whilst adorned in glow sticks.

♥ Make a ton of pointless lists.

♥ Have a laser tag tournament.

100 More things to do when you're bored: Summer Edition

♥ Host a back yard party. Consult Gala for tips.

♥ Go out to eat a late lunch with a friend you haven't seen in forever. Spend the next four hours catching up and rediscovering why you love this person as much as you do. Pay your bill. Go shopping. Repeat for dinner. Part ways and make plans to never go that long without speaking again.

♥ Have a baking fest with a close friend. Pass out the fruits of your labor to strangers you encounter while on an adventure.

50 Fun Things to do This Summer!

♥ Have a balloon day! Buy as many balloons as you can safely transport and have a photo shoot at a nearby park. When you're done, pass out the balloons to unsuspecting children.

♥ Write a love story.

♥ Make a scrapbook detailing all the fun you're about to have.

♥ Go to a roller rink/ice rink.

♥ Cleanse, organize, and simplify your life.

♥ Go to IHOP (or any other 24 hour restaurant/diner) at 4:00 AM

♥ Have a mid-afternoon nap.

More from Gala

♥ Have a retro day. Dress as if in an era gone by. Speak in period slang. Be generally confused by new technology.

♥ Revel in the beauty of nature. Meditate. Take lots of pictures. Post them online with really sarcastic, funny, or lame captions.

♥ Go to your local flea market. Buy something questionably unusual with no clear purpose. Figure out different uses for it. Bonus points for actual practicality. Double bonus points for actually discovering it's real purpose without using your mad Google-fu skills. Automatic win if it is blue and sparkly.

♥ Be your own fabulous self. There is nothing more entertaining and fulfilling as that.

♥ If all else fails, blast some music and dance around in your cutest pair of underwear. Not only are you exercising, you're also working off some of that extra energy!
